NASA Confirms Artemis III Moon Landing Target Date
NASA officials announced today that the Artemis III mission remains on track for a late 2026 launch, despite ongoing challenges with both the Space Launch System (SLS) and the SpaceX Starship lunar lander.
The mission will see four astronauts launch aboard the Orion capsule, dock with the Lunar Gateway station (or directly with Starship in an alternative plan), and ultimately land two crew members on the lunar south pole.
Key mission objectives include: • Landing the first woman and first person of color on the Moon • Exploring permanently shadowed craters believed to contain water ice • Collecting lunar samples for return to Earth • Testing technologies for eventual Mars missions
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized that the mission represents "not just a return to the Moon, but a quantum leap in our capabilities as a spacefaring civilization."
SpaceX continues to advance Starship testing at Boca Chica, Texas, with multiple orbital flight tests planned before human-rated certification.
