Are there any weather warnings right now?

The National Weather Service has 79 active warnings and advisories over land, covering 25 states. The most common are extreme heat warning (15), red flag warning (11), flood warning (10). A further 262 marine advisories are in force offshore.

What do the severity levels mean?

The NWS grades each alert Extreme, Severe, Moderate or Minor. Extreme and Severe mean an extraordinary or significant threat to life or property — tornado, hurricane and flash flood warnings sit here. Moderate and Minor cover advisories such as heat, dense fog and small craft. Severity is about the hazard, not how likely it is; that is the separate "certainty" field.

Why is the map shaded by state rather than by warning area?

Only about one alert in six publishes a map polygon. The rest identify their area by zone code, which resolves to a state without further lookups but no finer. Shading states is what the data actually supports; the area description on each alert below names the counties and zones precisely.

Can I rely on this page for safety decisions?

No. This is a live mirror of a public feed and can lag or fail. For warnings that affect you, use weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, your local NWS office or an official alerting app, and follow instructions from local emergency management.

Alerts come from the National Weather Service public API, the same source that feeds weather.gov, and are refreshed every few minutes. Marine advisories are counted separately: they are usually the largest group by number and cover offshore zones that belong to no state.
