The eclipse

Parts of the United States get a partial eclipse.
Eye safety is not optional. Looking at a partially eclipsed Sun without certified solar filters causes permanent retinal damage, and it does not hurt while it happens. The meteor shower
The Perseids peak on the night of 12 into 13 August, with rates of roughly 50 to 100 meteors per hour under good conditions. The particles hit the atmosphere at about 37 miles per second, and they come from the dust trail of comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.
What makes 2026 exceptional is not the shower — that is much the same every year — but the Moon. The Perseids are frequently ruined by moonlight washing out the fainter meteors. In 2026 the peak falls hours after a new Moon, so the entire prime window of roughly 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. is free of lunar interference. That is the best possible lunar circumstance for any meteor shower, and it makes this the strongest Perseid year since 2018.
How to watch the meteors
No equipment. Telescopes and binoculars actively hurt here — they narrow your field of view, and meteors can appear anywhere. What matters is:
- get away from streetlights if you possibly can;
- give your eyes at least 20 minutes to adapt, and keep your phone screen off;
- lie back so you can take in as much sky as possible;
- be patient — rates come in bursts, and the hourly figures are ideal-condition maximums, not a promise.
The meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, but you should not stare at it. Meteors near the radiant have short trails; the long, memorable ones show up well away from it.
